Information Management - Client Success Stories

Many companies struggle with how to leverage information across the organization to maximize business benefits. In some enterprises individual departments create their own data silos that are inaccessible to anyone else and lock up potential value. In other cases, there are multiple sources of the same data that conflict with each other and cause confusion and data quality issues. Without proper management of information those problem get worse over time.

We help clients define a clear approach to information management, improve the quality of their existing data, and put in place organizational structures that ensure they can effectively manage data assets in the future.

Creating an Information Management Culture and Infrastructure

Problem:  The client was unable to manage information effectively, leading to data quality problems. As a result, the client was unable to leverage information about its customers and operations, making it almost impossible to get crucial insights into the business that are necessary to make effective decisions and improve profitability.

Goal: Fitzgerald Analytics was brought in to improve the client’s information management processes, as well as transform the company culture with regard to data.

Approach:

  • Identifying Data Problems: “Triage” of data quality problems, identifying high-impact issues that can be tackled relatively quickly vs. complex problems that can only be solved in the long term.
  • Client Training on Information Management: The team spent time and effort on the education of all members of the Executive team, IT department and relevant business heads on key master data management (MDM) concepts. Topics include the value of data as a strategic asset, benefits of careful data management., and industry best practices.
  • Data Management: The team supported the creation of a governance framework that defines how data is to be managed; the documentation of existing data assets and processes that transform data; identifying the necessary changes to how data is stored, updated, and transformed, in order to ultimately achieve centralized, reliable information.
  • Communication: The team changed organizational structures to simplify the communication and collaboration between IT, business, and analytics teams.
  • Skill Development to Recognize and Leverage Information: Finally, the FA team led the building of capabilities that allow IT and business stakeholders to recognize the impact of projects and initiatives on data assets, and the creation of assets and tools that make it easier to leverage information, such as data warehouse, data mart, and an analytics platform

Result:  The client recognized the value of well-designed information management strategies and all departments now fully support the effort to improve how the company uses data. This project is still in progress and the client has already benefited from improved information quality. Key client reports are generated faster and more accurately, and an initial data mart made it possible to perform high-value data analyses that were not feasible before.
